M. H. S. Coll. I, IV, 199, 204. It is scarcely proba-ble that none of these negroes and raulattoes were held as slaves, although many had been manumitted, and traffic in slaves had beenforbidden in Massachusetts in 1788.^ Vermont is credited with 17 slaves. This was the result ofa clerical error, and was officially corrected in 1870.^ The census of 1790 gave the number of free blacks as 59527.These were about equally divided between free states and slave states. The colored element at this census constituted ifg larger proportionof the population than ever after, viz., 19.3 percent. 1. Credit Report Errors – What Happens When I Dispute Errors?

In this video we explain what happens “behind the scenes” when you dispute an item on your credit report.

There are all these different companies like Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, Innovis and ChoicePoint. We’re often asked, “When I make a dispute to them, what happens at that point?”

From the outside, all we see is we make a dispute to a credit bureau and usually about 30 days later we get the results of the investigation back. It will say whether the credit bureau is keeping, updating or deleting the account.

Here’s what goes on kind of behind the scenes when that dispute hits the credit bureau.
We never recommend doing it online. When you do it online it automatically gets turned into a two-digit code. That might be, “It’s not my account,” or “It was included in bankruptcy or identity theft.” If you send a letter, then somebody will read that letter and convert it into a two-digit code. Then that code is sent to the furnisher. The furnisher is asked to investigate. Normally any document you include to the credit bureau will not be sent to the furnisher.

Let me just back up a step. When you send that letter, normally all of the letter and attachments are scanned in and sent overseas to some outsource place. Then you have somebody that will read that stuff. They typically have about two or three minutes to do this.

In a lot of countries, the company that actually employs the person that’s doing the investigating will be paid about 25 cents for your dispute. Even if you have four or five items on your credit report you’re disputing, if you send it in one letter, they get paid 25 cents.

You have somebody overseas that will turn your letter and all the attachments, and you may have sent 50 pages of attachments, into a two-digit code. That’s sent electronically to the furnisher.

Somebody there at the furnisher at the creditor gets that on their computer. They have a couple of minutes to make an investigation, if we can call it an investigation. They’re normally not allowed to do research on the internet, or to call you or call anybody else. They look at that and then they send a response back to the credit bureau. That generates a form that is sent out to you.

The credit bureaus really are just trying to take all your information and narrow it down to an electronic code. They say, “That’s the extent of our investigation.” They’ll just repeat back whatever the furnisher or creditor tells them to do. Remember, that’s their customer.

We help people who have errors on their credit report and get them fixed – quickly and for free! We are consumer attorneys helping clients under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Over 70% of credit reports contain an error, resulting in higher mortgage rates, interest rates and even lost job opportunities.

Credit Reporting Agencies such as Trans Union, Experian and Equifax frequently make mistakes on consumers’ credit reports. Chances are excellent that your credit report contains an error. Approximately 20% of these mistakes result in the denial of credit or a higher rate of interest. Some of the more common mistakes made by the credit reporting agencies include:

•Identity theft. This type of error is growing exponentially and may be the number one cause for credit reporting mistakes today.

•Mismerged information. This kind of error occurs between different people with the same name. For example, John A. Doe who lives in Montana may have his credit information placed on John A. Doe who lives in Florida. This is a very common mistake.

•Discrepancies amongst credit reporting agencies for the same debt. One credit reporting agency may report a debt as current while another might report it as delinquent.

•Delinquencies that are reported longer than 7 years. Derogatory credit information has to be removed from your credit report after seven years from the first delinquency. Sometimes a debt buyer or a collection agency “re-date” a date of last delinquency so that a derogatory stays on your credit report longer than seven years. In 2004, the Federal Trade Commission hit NCO Financial Systems with a .5 million fine for doing this very thing. A delinquent debt may not be reported longer than 7 years on your credit report. Yet, in order to force you to pay the debt at some point, some collection agencies “re-date” the beginning date of the debt so that it stays on your credit report longer.

We can get errors removed from your credit report for free.

Using the Fair Credit Reporting Act (“FCRA”), our credit repair lawyers can fix your credit for free. We will write the appropriate letter to the credit reporting agencies to get the item removed for you. If we are successful after writing a letter, you owe us nothing. If we have to sue the credit reporting agencies to get the offending trade line removed for you, you will still owe us nothing. The FCRA requires the defendants to pay your fees and costs and we look to them to do so. Of course, you can write a dispute letter to the credit reporting agencies yourself, but why would you want to when we will do it for free?

We can also get money from the credit reporting agencies for you.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (“FACTA”), we can get money damages for you if we have to sue the credit reporting agency to get your credit report cleaned up. You may be entitled to actual damages including emotional distress, embarrassment and humiliation. Call us for a free case evaluation.

Put our 20 years of experience to work for you.
